   Me neither, I've only come across it as the US abbreviation for number,   
   (whereas the UK uses No (with a superscripted o) and as the hash key on   
   phones.   
      
   An illustration of the US usage is present in the Windows 10 start menu.   
   In the list of all apps, those starting with a number; 7-Zip for example   
   are listed under #. Obviously Microsoft has not heard that is actually a   
   pound sign.
