I have some groups (hamster.*) not having any posts for years, but I
still subscribe them because I am using hamster gateway. Newsgroups
don't need checking from time to time as web forums. Putting them in the
   subscription list doesn't cost anything.

I created a subject filter in TB to delete them. Handy now, but I worry
about more sophisticated, pattern-less spam, though it seems not likely
   in today's Usenet.

My X61 is similar to T60. I upgraded memory to 4G, 3G for system and the
other 1G that XP cannot use for ramdisk. HDD sata mode is quick enough
for me now, maybe I will consider SSD later. And I use ThrottleStop to
   boost CPU sometimes.
