I have the same thing, but with Windows XP.

I have a 4-port hub, but with Windows XP.

It has a printer and a (mostly switched off) external hard drive (with
   its own power supply).

If I plug in a USB flash drive at just the right moment of boot-up, it
connects, but sometimes it doesn't. Then I book in safe mode, shut
down, switch off, and try again. Or, if I take out the flash frive and
plug it into the computer directly, it sometimes works.
