Well, it used to be, a 1-900 number was involved and you could
talk to the women. Then, at the end of the month, there would be
a hugely expensive long distance call billed on the telephone bill.
And the telephone company would be careful to point out it
only supported the scams, it didn't invent the scam.

But the trend now, seems to be waiting from some gullible individual
to send emergency funds because "Petunia has fallen down the stairs
and needs money for the hospital bill". Or maybe Petunia needs
airfare to come see you. Seeing as you are in Aus, the amount
you would pony up would be sufficient for a plane flight there.

Apparently, some duffers lose a couple hundred thousand to this stuff.
It's not a trivial amount of stupidity involved here.

To use a fishing analogy, if you "knew there were whoppers to be reeled in",
wouldn't you pay for a ton of adverts ? Most of the sardines in the
audience, are too smart to be biting on that hook. And the thing is,
this sort of crap has been going on for so long, how could
anyone fall for it ? Yet, here we are.
