Yes, the notifications are a popup (in the lower-right corner) of new
messages which have arrived in one of my Gmail accounts. And its indeed
   polling at whatever interval.

Don't be confused, that *my* job! :-) I don't remember why I tried to
use Outlook for one of my Gmail accounts. It probably was just a test,
trying to determine of it's of any use (to me), etc..

At the moment, it's doing what I described and I can't even get rid of
it (which doesn't really bother me).

If I click on the 'Mail' app, I get my Gmail Inbox, but it's obscured
by a popup "Windows Mail and Calendar are no longer supported". There
are only two choices to get rid of the popup, 1) 'Export Data' which I
do not want/need and 2) 'Open Outlook'. So I select 'Open Outlook',
which gives me the 'Sync your Gmail account' popup, which, as described,
I do not want, so 'Cancel' is the only option. That brings me to
'Welcome to the new Outlook', which gives the name of my Gmail account
and says 'You didn't sign in. Please try to add your email account
again.' with a 'Go back to classic Outlook' link which does absolutely
nothing. So what's left is 'Continue' which brings the unwanted 'Sync
your Gmail account' or 'Advanced Setup' which also gives the unwanted
'Sync your Gmail account'. Catch-22. So all that's left is to close
('X') Outlook and no way to change/delete the Gmail account.

I *warned* you that this was a totally irrelevant/useless post, didn't
   I!? :-)
