   I reproduced s/t like this (possibly "something obvious") by resizing   
   Name as narrow as possible so that no Names were visible but only a   
   narrow empty column on the left. When other columns were disabled in the   
   top-right column widget, Names re-appeared, and then disappeared as the   
   original columns were restored. At any point there was still a column   
   divider between Name and the next column that could be used to resize Name.   
      
   Maybe some more profound cause, eg corruption of the column data in   
   xulstore.json, could cause the Name column to vanish entirely.
