If this is the regular Mail&News password authentication (as opposed to
a webpage window for OAuth2) I think this is how some of Microsoft's
e-mail servers react when not allowing password authentication, at least
I think that's the behaviour I saw after they started phasing out
regular password authentication in Hotmail, and before I changed the
account in SeaMonkey to use OAuth2.

If you're using regular password authentication and it's not an
"application-specific password" (IIRC these can't be created for
Hotmail), try changing the authentication method to OAuth2.

Do note that you *need* to use "smtp.office365.com" as the server name
   in order to use OAuth2.

(But I have no idea if the login page still works decently, last I had
to log in was several months ago, they may have changed things...)
