   IIRC there *are* some settings which can achieve this, but I forgot the   
   details, probably involves network.protocol-handler.external.http and   
   .https, but I think I also recall something else being needed on top of   
   this? Possibly one or more of network.protocol-handler.expose*?   
   (But at least this one is said not to work on Windows? [1];

   From a quick glance, the extension you linked [0] works differently, by   
   adding event listeners that get triggered e.g. by mouse clicks.
