Adding newlines into URLs will break them. Instead of long string for
the URL, it gets truncated. Some clients can try to append multi-line
URLs back together, but don't count on it. Seems some clients will keep
the multi-line URL together if you enclose it in angle brackets.

Max recommended line length is 998 characters. Keep the URLs to their
own [long] line. If you are concerned that some readers don't have NNTP
clients that can handle URLs longer than the window width (the only ones
I can think of are those that are command-line clients, not GUI
clients), include the long unbroken URL, and a short URL for it. There
are several URL shortening services. I use https://tinyurl.com/. You
end up with 2 lines for the same target:

   Long URL:
   Short URL:

For whatever line length you specify in Opera Mail, you can't configure
its preview pane to be wider than that? That is, with 72-char line
lengths, chars for the newsgroup names, and borders, you can't get the
Opera Mail window wide enough to show 72 chars in the preview pane?
Actually, it looks like your preview pane is already greater than 72
chars wide, and they lines wrap before they hit the right-side of the
   preview pane.

I've never used Opera Mail. "Automatically wrap outgoing message"
sounds more about fitting lines (wrapping) within the window width than
about setting a fixed line length.

   Wasn't Opera Mail discontinued?

That doesn't mean it stops working just because support and updates
stopped. You might want to ask in those Opera forums on how to
configure it to fix maximum line length to 72 characters, and then
address whatever wrapping, or lack thereof, in the compose or preview
   panes.
