XPost: uk.politics.misc, alt.politics.british, alt.conspiracy.princess-diana       XPost: alt.conspiracy, alt.conspiracy.new-world-order, alt.america       XPost: us.politics       From: oO@oO.com               Israeli Press Condemns its Government's Actions        Sunday, July 02 2006 @ 09:11 AM Eastern Daylight Time                      Israeli press harshly reacted to the Israeli government's attack       on Gaza, which has caused worldwide outrage.               Leading Israeli newspaper Haaretz questioned the operation's       legality and legitimacy, and stressed the attacks will not help rescue the       kidnapped Israeli soldier.               As for "arresting politicians for possible exchange," the paper       criticized, "To arrest people for the purpose of using them as a bargaining       chip is what gangs do, not states."               Liberal Haaretz reported the issue under the headline "Israel       loses senses."               The news also stressed it is hard to believe the Tel Aviv       administration launched the attacks just to rescue the kidnapped soldier.               The paper listed all avenues the Israeli army is using to rescue       the soldier, and added, "To bomb bridges used by vehicles and people, to       seize a long-in-ruins airport, to blow up power plants and leave most of       Gaza City in the dark, to deliver notices that Palestinians should fear for       their lives, to fly planes over Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's palace,       and to arrest elected HAMAS officials: The government wants us to believe it       is doing all these actions to rescue Shalit."               Haaretz believes the Israeli government's claim that Syria and       the HAMAS leader in Syria Khalid Mashal play the "key role" and pressuring       the elected HAMAS government and Palestinians is absurd, and asked, "Then       why attack the local Palestinian administration that is not responsible for       the kidnapping?"               The Israeli paper stressed that Israel will not achieve its goal       by punishing Gaza civilians, and reminded Israel finally had to make peace       with Hezbollah and withdraw from Lebanon after destroying the infrastructure       in southern Lebanon and pressuring civilians.               "The problem is not to rescue a kidnapped soldier and modify the       face of the Middle East," Haaretz said, and stressed the Israeli government       should immediately release HAMAS officials and start negotiations.               Meanwhile, according to a poll conducted in Israel, most       Israelis support the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the       kidnapped soldier.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
