   Oh, but wait, there is considerably more to it than YOU like to admit or   
   even know.   
   The original purpose of the NRA was to train men in the use and handling   
   of firearms so that they would be better prepared to use them if called   
   to duty in a major conflict.   
   This was a direct reaction to two major historical incidents:  The Civil   
   War, and the formation of a group that came to be known as the Ku Klux Klan.   
   It turned out that most Union troops were woefully inept with weapons,   
   which was a major reason for the high casualties suffered by the Union   
   (aside from General McClellan) during the earlier years of the war,   
   especially.   
   Also, the NRA wanted a way to have men (and women, btw) able to defend   
   themselves from outlaw bands, KKK especially.
