Nothing like Star Trek of course, but an effect       > that could be measured.              When they talk about warping in this context, they are talking       about curving space. For example, if you lay out a series of       grid lines in space, those line will tend to curve towards objects       with high gravity. It has nothing to do with a space ship going       faster than the speed of light.              > Technically you can exceed the speed of light, though not in a vacuum.       > Look up cherenkov radiation.              But in no case can you go faster than C, the absolute speed of       light. In the case of Cherenkov Radiation, they are talking about       going faster than the speed of light in a given medium where that       speed of light is less than C. When the speed of light in a       given medium is the same as C, the effect evaporates. So, for       example, one can go faster than the speed of light in water since       the speed of light in water is less than the absolute speed of       light. That doesn't help us in space travel since outer space       is essentially a vacuum.              > Other than Michio Kaku and a few other guests, most of what you hear on       > Coast to Coast simply isn't true.              I don't mind people calling in and giving their personal stories,       other than the ghost stories. I get kind of tired of that quickly.       If that many people are having these unusual experiences, then I       don't object to research into those areas. What I do object to,       however, are people making up all these foo-foo theories and       representing them as science or the truth.              -john-              --       ======================================================================       John A.
