   I'm not sure if you're aware how deep this irony goes. Congress opened   
   the great plains to immigration (of dubious legality, given treaties   
   with the Indians), who brought many of those invasive species along with   
   then (tumbleweed in particular, from the steppes of Russia). The   
   greatest ecological catastrophe in North American history, the Dust   
   Bowl, followed only a few decades later, because the native grasses had   
   been replaced with alien species (wheat, mostly).
