But to some extent there is a need       to know the local time. If you want to stage an operation       during darkness, it helps to know what time is it       locally (JULIET). Or if you wanted to meet with the       tribal chiefs or rebuild a bridge or catch the group       leaders at breakfast etc. Time on military bases       essentially exists in local time. Troops are told       "Muster at 0700" in local time.              > ...If the world aviation industry can get along with       > just Z time and local time, why not the military.              Actually, the aviation doesn't deal exclusively with ZULU.       Flights are scheduled at local time. Depart and arrival       times are given in local times including allowances for       daylight savings time. It would surely be very confusing       to tell ordinary air passengers "We're about to arrive at       Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport where the time       is 0300 hours Thursday when, for all practical purposes,       it's "really" 8pm Wednesday. Much easier to tell grandma       to pick us up at the airport at 8 o'clock than to tell her       "OH THREE HUNDRED HOURS THURSDAY". Somewhere, in nearly       every case, the "end user" will have to translate the       standard (ZULU) to whatever his local time is.                     Craig 'Lumpy' Lemke              www.n0eq.com/greenradios.htm              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
