I continued to test the concept using red hot oven
elements looking at the reflection at different angles,
it was all very clear that a big part of avoiding radar
was to eliminate the all-direction reflections and
even try to concentrate each reflection into as small
   a beam as possible.

I was hoping that paper #11 would get something
going to start implementation of the technology, the
memory of 700 US pilots getting off the planes coming
back from Hanoi POW prisons was a thing always on
my mind, and here was a hope that it would not happen
   again.

I received a copy of the letter NASA sent to the
patent office saying from the information I put in
paper #11, NASA would not exercise rights under
the Space Act of 1958 to take my airfoil patent.

After the airfoil patent issued in 1978, I began
planning the preparation of a patent application
for stealth shapes, and immediately named the
   application "Electronic Avoidance Configurations",
because I felt it also applied to active infra-red.

Spring went to summer to fall, and I continued
to have a reluctance to put any details on paper,
it was clear to me that this technology had to
remain a secret, and for a long time.

But I started to worry by November 1978, as
I could not wait a year to file for the flat surface
faceted shapes, patent law says after one year
in public view puts the invention in the public domain.

Then a relative began to insist I visit the hospital
450 miles away, and I was torn between leaving
right away, or somehow filing a patent application
   first.
I already had the oath filed out and notarized,
and the other required elements except for the
   disclosure specification.
I just couldn't concentrate on making drawings
and writing all the details of the theory of avoidance
and the shapes more effective than flat facets, so
I just mentioned paper #11 as the heart of the
   invention.

I got it all together and mailed in registered mail
on December 22, 1978. and the next day went on
the trip to visit the relative in the hospital, and stayed
   there 3 weeks.

I couldn't stay any longer, I had to go home and
pay bills, and I was anxious to get the receipt for
   the patent application
