   I was certainly out of touch with this, but note that it was only   
   publicly disclosed five days before the 2000 election.   
      
   If you had had a criminal record when you ran in 1999, would you have   
   expected to win the seat if you'd not previously disclosed it, but   
   someone revealed it five days before the vote? And what if your main   
   opponent had been in that position - would you have taken the attitude   
   that 'it's nothing'?
