   IMO top-posting can occasionally be OK when a comment 'stands alone',   
   but most of the time it makes readers do a lot of scrolling to find what   
   the comment is actually about. Or maybe only a little scrolling, but   
   they don't know how much scrolling is required when they open the post   
   and read the comment.   
      
   (Many newspapers have rules saying e.g. that the topic of an article has   
   to be made clear within the first 3 paragraphs. Hacks call the paragraph   
   saying what the article is about a 'nut graf'. OK it's a different genre   
   but some of the same communication principles apply).
