|    Burglar admits laptop thefts    |

From: bern.boergeenreclame@planet.nl              Burglar admits laptop thefts              Mar 2 2006                     By Amy Hunt, The Evening Chronicle                     A bungling burglar owned up to his crime because he was scared the SAS were       after him.              Hapless David Forster, 27, sneaked into an office used by an assistant of       Lord John Stevens, former Northumbria and Metropolitan Police chief       constable, and stole two laptops.              But when he was pulled in by police for another burglary at the Regent       Centre, Gosforth, he confessed to the previous offence, fearing security       services were going to hunt him down because of Lord Stevens' high profile.              Lord Stevens is heading Operation Paget, the investigation into the death of       Diana, Princess of Wales, and the theft of the laptops sparked fears that       sensitive information could have been stolen.              Newcastle magistrates heard yesterday how Forster, of Wooler Crescent,       Teams, Gateshead, got into the reception area of the Grainger Suite of       Dobson House at the Regent Centre through a door which had been left open.              Once inside he found a bunch of keys, using these to let himself into the       office where he had spied the laptops through a window.              He also stole about £750 cash by forcing open a box in a drawer in the       office, some time between January 27 and 30 this year.              Three weeks later, between February 19 and 20, Forster broke into Bulman       House, also at the Regent Centre, and stole another laptop.              Prosecutor Glenn Blackwood told the court Forster had cut himself on broken       glass, allowing police to trace him through DNA.              He was arrested and while in custody also admitted the earlier burglary.              Defending, Paul Donoghue said Forster had stolen the computers to sell on       for drugs money. He said: "He stumbled on the laptop by accident and had       been absolutely terrified afterwards because the case generated quite a bit       of local and national interest.              "He wanted to co-operate with Northumbria Police as much as possible because       he was terrified he would be put into the hands of the security services."              Forster pleaded guilty to the two burglaries yesterday and was remanded in       custody by magistrates for pre-sentence reports to be made. He will be       sentenced on March 22.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
