Given a choice between believing a direct statement from Lord
Fellowes or believing some hearsay evidence from an anonymous
source supposedly quoting an unnamed embassy radio operator,
how could anyone believe the latter?

Things might be different IF there was 1) evidence of foul play
in the death of Diana AND 2) evidence that Sir Robert, as he
then was, was involved in that foul play; but as there is
neither, there is no reason to doubt his word.

The bottom line is that Princess Diana died in an accidental
car crash so the whereabouts of this or that official at the
time is completely immaterial - details of who met whom in the
hours before the crash is completely immaterial - what rules
were broken in the hours after the crash is completely immaterial.
None of it has any bearing on the cause of the tragic crash which
is well known, very easy to understand and all too common - a
   drunk behind the wheel.
