From: steuart@btinternet.com              "The second piece of       evidence which I showed to them--again, I've seen documents and evidence       to support this--was that Henri Paul, the chauffeur at the time in the       accident, was in the employment of MI6 in 1992. He was a paid informant       for MI6 in 1992, and, again, I had seen evidence of that."              MATT LAUER Interview with Richard Tomlinson interview, 31 August 1998.              Richard Tomlinson, the ex-MI6 agent, is important to Diana conspiracy for a       number of reasons, most importantly his claim that HP was an informant for       MI6. It is due to Tomlinsons testimony alone, that conspiracy theorists have       unquestioning faith, in the belief that HP was working for British       intelligence.              Yet any reasonable person, who has looked closely at what Tomlinson actually       said, especially his notorious affidavit, should have adopted extreme       caution, without the conclusions of Paget. I have persistently posted about       this in the NG over the years.              Paget has only now allowed the British public a glimpse of what Tomlinson       actually told the French investigation, instead of the various sound bites       and media clippings surrounding it. More importantly, Tomlinson has now       retreated from his former position, effectively destroying any evidence that       linked HP to MI6.              We should remind ourselves again, what Tomlison said in that infamous       affidavit,              'I cannot claim that I remember from reading this file that the name of the       person was Henri Paul, but I have no doubt with the benefit of hindsight       that this was       he.'              If Tomilson had gone before Stephan with this testimony, the French Judge       would have thought it of low evidential value. But he didn't and, thanks to       Paget, we now know what he actually told the investigation in France,              'I cannot say for sure that it was Henri Paul but I am positive that it       was a Frenchman working in the security department of the Ritz Hotel.'              A Frenchman working in a hotel in Paris, compelling testimony indeed. It is       no wonder that the French Investigation was more than a little cynical about       the connection between HP and MI6. But Paget went further and identified the       file to which Tomlinson was referring and found that "The file contains no       reference to an informant based at the Ritz Hotel in Paris in any capacity."              After confronting him this evidence,              "Richard Tomlinson accepted that some of this detail may be knowledge he has       subsequently obtained from the media that he has mixed with his own       recollection. Richard Tomlinson now states only that he believes Henri       Paul would have been working for some intelligence or security agency,       because of his position at       such a hotel, but he cannot state that this was the SIS."              Bang goes another myth which has lingered for the past 8 years.              Geoff.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
