It's hopeless. Most people are too busy trying to survive in a crappy
economy to have the time to go looking for real news sources (as opposed
to the lying House Organs that most newspapers and tv news channels have
become thanks to consolidation in Right Wing hands), even if they have
the interest or education that would equip them to do so. The only way
you get to know what's actually going on around here is by reading news
sources from other countries and listening to NPR, and most people have
been convinced by ceaseless Right Wing screaming that anyone Left of
Caligula is raving "Liberal", whatever that means -- pretty much nothing
any more, although by tomorrow the Fringe Right may well have managed to
equate "Liberal" with Al Quaida; God knows they're trying hard enough,
and they have all the money. Recent history, if you can call it that,
proves conclusively that nothing works as well in America as the Big
Lie, Constantly Repeated; well, we are the original home of PR.

Just gotta wait it out. Of course by the time the pendulum finally
drags itself the other way again all of us here will be long dead, the
environment destroyed, and every cooperative system in the world
trampled to death under the rapacious lunacy of Globalization. But
hey, that's what happens when a species allows any extreme modification
to run rampant and take over: sooner or later, it ceases to fit real
world conditions sufficiently that the species becomes extinct.

Me, I'm trying to just enjoy what's enjoyable about life and not let
the fascist bastards poison it for me. I support MoveOn and other sane
elements trying to oppose the storm of stupidity and venal crookedness
that has overtaken us as a nation; write the occasional letter to the
papers to give another point of view than Carl Rove's crackpot Robber
Baron gutter politics; and cultivate, as Candide says, my garden.

Other strategies may work better for other people. But if you think
we're going to get these monsters' boot off our neck any time soon, you
are in for serious disillusion and burnout. Most people in America are
too dumb or ignorant or wilfully disengaged to give a damn so long as
they are promised that they will be able to afford that second SUV, man.

We won't be the first "civilization" to perish under the weight of its
own stubborn stupidness, but we may well be the last. The bears and
raccoons and such, if any remain, will no doubt heave great sighs of
relief, so at least somebody will benefit.

   Happy New Year.
