Nothing wrong with it, and thanks for it; but I think of these things
a bit differently. I think there was a time when proto-humans and
even early humans were still simple, though clever, animals. At a
certain point, souls began to take up residence in order to live on
the physical plane. At a certain point, when great numbers of those
souls have completed their courses of incarnate lives as human beings
and moved on to discarnate levels of spiritual evolution, human beings
(if there are any left at that point) will return to being "just"
animals, that is animate creatures that operate via instinct, not
reason. Sometime later, assuming the planet is still liveable and
all other life forms presently on it haven't been extinguished for
lack of habitat, water, and sustenance in general (except for those
that live as our parasites and scavengers -- rats, pigeons and
crows, roaches etc), another species edging up into self-aware
consciousness will be taken up by another wodge of souls as the
vehicles for incarnated lives. Maybe bears, or raccoons.

Just another theory, no more proveable than yours; but I like mine
   better, what can I say?

In times like these though, the claim that human beings are actually
something you could describe as creatures of reason (as opposed to
strictly instinct) is sort of hard to believe, let alone defend . . .
