As they say, anything is possible.

If the "transmitter/receiver" hypothesis is popular, I suspect that
its because the idea that our self-consciousness/self-identity/souls
are just the product of processes in our brain, and when our brain
ceases to function, so do we, is very troubling to most of us.

Also, most of us don't want to think about the prospect that when we
die and our brains stop funtioning, we are no more. And so we develop
hypotheses like the "transmitter/receiver" one to harmonize what we
believe to be scientific fact about our brains with what we want to
believe about the immortality of our souls, and then we try to avoid
thinking about it much more. Which is where the entertainment centers
   come in.
