   My father, who was an adamant atheist and materialist, died clinically on   
   the operating table. He also experienced a profound sense of peace without   
   pain. Afterwards, he didn't change his philosophy outwardly, but he was a   
   bit more respectful of other beliefs than he was before.   
      
   I disagree that this is (only) endorphins or a purely physical phenomenon. I   
   think this is a variation on the NDE experience. I don't think it's an   
   "either/or" issue--"either/or" thinking is part of the old paradigm, which   
   also includes materialism and reductionism.
