A great book on the subject is "What They Saw... At the Hour of Death:
A New Look at Evidence for Life After Death", by Karlis Osis and
   Erlendur Haraldsson.

A study was done in both the US and India that involved thousands of
interviews with doctors, nurses, and hospice workers related to the
death bed experiences of there patients. The results are very
impressive. It appears that death bed visions are very common in both
   cultures.

The study also found that the percentage of persons having visions
declined if the patient was medicated, and the nature of the visions
also changed. The clearer the person was mentally, the more frequent
the visions involved friends and family members that had already died.
These dead friends and family members claimed to be coming to help the
person at their time of death. The dying person also became very
peaceful after the vision. The visions from the medicated group were
more often dream like or hallucinatory in nature, and had little
   emotional effect.
