You know, i wonder if some of this is really about being suddenly forced
into intimate contact, in a life-threatening emergency, with one's own
soul -- that is, the personality (which is linked to the body and its
survival concerns) gets displaced and one is left with the pure spirit,
and for that spirit, death is a trifle, something that has been gone
through many times before and that serves merely as punctuation. Hence,
no anxiety, and a glimpse of the positive, peaceful acceptance that the
pure spirit presumably enjoys. Then, if life continues after all,
personality takes charge again, since its main job is to run what
matters to it most -- physical survival. Once the body is gone, the
personality also is discarded, so the interests there are united.

   Just a notion.
