   Searle responded by asking them to imagine that instead of having a rule   
   book the man memorised all the rules in the system, and then left the   
   room.  He would still be able to shuffle the symbols in his imagination,   
   according to the memorised rules, but he still wouldn't understand any   
   Chinese.  This is because he only understands a formal system designed   
   to produce Chinese answers using formal symbol manipulation, not the   
   Chinese language.
