   It's more that unless you "sell out" you can't be happy, State or no State.   
      
   Whatever makes you happy...no matter what it is...will make someone else   
   accuse you of "selling out."  So why bother trying to avoid that   
   accusation?   
      
   Suppose a man's parents are on his case to become a doctor.  If he does,   
   he's "betraying progressives and selling out to the medical-industrial   
   complex."  If he doesn't, he's "betraying his parents and selling out to   
   the anti-intellectual mainstream."   
      
   Suppose a woman's parents are on her case to never date.  If she doesn't,   
   she's "betraying her heart and selling out to the prudish religious   
   right."  If she does go on dates, she's "betraying her culture and selling   
   out to imperialist pop media."
