About 2-3 years ago I got very interested, did a bunch of reading, bought a
radio board… but my life at the time didn’t really allow the time to get
into it, so it fizzled. Things changed for me over this past summer and I’d
been reading about it again, and just this past weekend went to an intro
workshop which included assembling a radio kit.

I have some long-term concerns about meshtastic specifically, with how the
software works and, more significantly, the fact that “flood fill” is their
only routing strategy, but they definitely make it easiest to get into
things with an existing user base. I’m going to give that a try to learn
for a bit, as I read more about reticulum and meshcore
(reticulum’s”protocol” focus is particularly enticing to me, but i
   can’t
yet tell if it’s overblown for what Lora provides).

This was my mastodon thread on my summary of the landscape. I got good
   feedback and a few corrections/clarifications.

I am looking forward to playing with this more.
