Was it a genuine blog or just       another case of a successful author trying to get       some authentic net credentials while advertising       his latest effort? I mean no disrespect to Mr.       Gibson, but I have had it with self-promoting       authors whose only actions in the most creative       and non-commercial parts of the net are aimed at       selling books while pretending to be a serious       participant. For instance, we had a case       like that in alt.writing. A "big name" in       writing made a couple of posts to the m.w. group.       Ostensibly, he was "discussing," but all he       was really doing was publicizing the fact that       he was going to try selling his latest book on       a website. When readers to the group took       him seriously, he never even bothered to respond       to his follow-up, which he probably didn't even       bother to read. Plainly, he was doing nothing       but pitching his book and trying to authenticate       his net credentials. So, when you talk about       Mr. Gibson's final blog, I have to ask, is       that the last installment in a marketing plan,       or was he truly trying to swim in the       thoughtstream? (I would prefer to read a post       of response by Mr. Gibson, but in lieu of that       I welcome responses from any alt.cyberpunk reader       who has the intellectual capacity to do more than       growl a couple of insults indicating that I have       pushed his buttons...)                     the alt.genius.bill-palmer       --currently posting from the upstairs       office at rec.arts.prose              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
