   My late father told some wonderful stories of Russian Jewish emigres   
   to South Africa.  He grew up in Harrismith where the local merchant   
   was a Russian emigre.  One of his abiding memories was of this man   
   giving sweets to the poor children.  My father could never   
   understand this as a child because he was seldom allowed to get   
   sweets from the local store.  What he didn't understand was that his   
   mother had the means (and the inclination) to make homemade   
   confectionary which is what he and his siblings were given.  It was   
   only when he was an adult that he realised that his family had been   
   (comparatively) rich during the depression.
