   The world is full of psychopaths without empathy and they appear   
   quite capable of reasoning. It is just that their decisions might   
   not be very healthy to the rest of humanity.

   Intelligence, knowledge, empathy and wisdom, just to take a few   
   parameters, are all fairly independent of each other. It takes   
   a fair bit of intelligence and quite a bit of knowledge combined   
   with a remarkable lack of empathy to create the most dangerous   
   kinds of evil there is. The last 100 years show such people do   
   exist and what catastrophies they can cause.   
      
   I see no reason to expect it to be different for an AI.
