   I think that with our current resources the standard of living in the   
   1st world would *have* to suffer quite a sizeable drop to bring the 3rd   
   world up to some kind of median. Personally, as someone who's   
   consumption and expenditure are both pretty well managed in terms of   
   efficiency and modest relative to my peers, I don't really feel like it   
   would that much of a "drop" for me. How much you would "suffer" would   
   be relative to how 'decadent' the life you are currently living is.   
   This is of course assuming that we are already producing enough to   
   provide everyone with a decent, if modest standard of living. People   
   often talk about how the 1st world produces enough to feed a clothe the   
   globe's poor several times over, but I don't know how much of that is   
   true and how much popular mythology. I do sometimes wonder if the USA's   
   homelands defence budget could be put to better use though :)   
      
   And we are back to efficiency again.
