   This is gonna be a spoiler for the first volume of the 4-volume US edition   
   but it happens so early that it's not a spoiler for the novel as a whole   
   (it's really 1 novel instead of a quadrology, and sold as a 1000+ page 1-   
   volume edition in the UK)...   
      
   OK, you know how legend has it that Joan of Arc had voices in her head   
   which were saints telling her how to do stuff?  Well, Ash has voices in her   
   head too but they're computers uploading battle tactics and so on (and her   
   head isn't even the only place direct brain-computer hookups take place).   
   If you think CP is high-tech/low-life, the low-life side is definitely here   
   too.  If you think CP pays more attention to money than SF and fantasy do,   
   cash gets its proper credit in the novel.  And so on.
