|    A few questions about Usenet    |

From: michailid.v@upnet.gr              I am new to Usenet, and I have a few questions that might benefit the       rest of the Usenet refugees here, could any oldfags (gray-beards?)       enlighten us?              1. Where are the data located?       I know that you can subscribe to various providers and access Usenet       from their servers and each provider should be able to provide the same       data, same newsgroups, etc. I don't understand however how data is       hosted in this system; Do providers exchange data and host them on their       own servers? Do newsgroups have their own servers that providers access?       If I wanted to create my own "provider" could I start simply downloading       data from other providers and host them on my own hardware?              2. Why isn't Usenet used in tandem with the internet?       I have already used Usenet to download movies/music at very high speeds?       Why don't other services like Netflix/YouTube simply upload their movies       to Usenet and provide an indexing/decrypting service to access it?              3. How do you register newgroup names?       Is there a centralized body assigning newsgroup names, or can you create       private/custom groups like you would register a domain name?              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
