   iirc Sun dangled a large carrot in front of the local university if they   
   adopted Java.  This is a long tradition. In its day DEC made sure the   
   schools had access to PDP-11 systems and I doubt the college I went to   
   paid full list price for its System 360/30.  Microsoft had a substantial   
   'academic' discount for VC++ and their other products.   
      
   Java was bad but it the early '80s University of Maine used Pascal, a   
   language known for not bothering with I/O in its pure form.
