Yeah. Well people have strange ideas about what pilots are. Or people in
any occupation, I suppose. Some sort of fit the "right stuff" image, but
they aren't necessarily the best guys around. Basically anyone who makes
it past all the checks we have to do, and then does it time and time
again for year after year 9 we do two sim check, two medicals and one
line ride a year) is competent at least, and usually more than that.
As far as mental health goes, Pilots have one of the worst track records
going. Divorce, alchoholism ( Britsih pilots suffer from this more than
most BTW, so Clive has a paper asshole in more ways than one) but still
, this almost never affects the way we do our jobs. It's understood that
fucking around in an airplane in motion is a bad idea and personal
problems, quirks, and miscellaneous idiocies are all left outside the
cockpit door.
Me, I don't see a hobby of loonwhacking to be a big deal, m'self.
Asking some guys in the active piot's froups ( where i am relatively
well behaved) would give anyone interested a more objective view of my
knowledge and temperment.
