(PTI)              As Jammu and Kashmir continues to battle its worst flood       in 100 years, one of the leading environmental think-tank       Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has said heavy       and unchecked development has aggravated the tragedy in       the State, especially in Srinagar reports NDTV.              Several experts believe that these floods are not a       result of sudden increase in the water levels of Jhelum       river due to rainfall but happened because of State       Government's lackadaisical attitude, which did not warn       locals days in time. Moreover, other factors like       encroachment on wetlands, lakes and other water bodies in       and around Srinagar by developers in the last several       years also added in the woes. Another major gaffe       happened because of country's elite agency Central Water       Commission (CWC) responsible for forecasting floods in       the country, had no advisories for any part of Jammu and       Kashmir last week.              The fact that Jammu and Kashmir does not have a flood       forecasting system meant that the gravity of the       situation was missed till it was too late. So far as many       as 200 people have died and thousands are still waiting       for help after heavy rain left large parts of the State       submerged.              Meanwhile, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed       the Army and allied forces to increase the relief work in       the devastated State.              Chairing a high-level emergency meeting to review relief       operations in the state late this evening, Modi       emphasised that immediate attention be given to providing       basic necessities like food and water to people severely       affected by the calamity. The Prime Minister directed       that top priority be given to provision of essential       commodities to affected people in Srinagar town.              Continues at:              http://www.niticentral.com/2014/09/11/jk-floods-upas-disaster-ma       agement-policy-needs-to-be-junked-237633.html              Jai Maharaj, Jyotishi       Om Shanti              http://groups.google.com/group/alt.fan.jai-maharaj              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
