Change the tense in the last paragraph from "present" to "past". Biafra
was a state of Nigeria that tried to secede--almost sucessfully--but
capitulated in 1970 after four years of war and deprivation. Some
"Western" countries did try to help, officially even, but not enough.
And, while western imperialism still plays an important part in Africa
(eastern, too), it's their own politics that is causing the most grief.
(That's "politics" from the words "poly"--meaning many, and "tick"--a
blood sucking insect. This definition works in all countries at some
level, usually very high.)
The power to run a sovereign state always attracts the worst sort of
person. Occasionally, not often enough, somebody else gets the nod, and
we have peace/prosperity/true progress for a (short) while. A good rule
of thumb (disgusting term that it is) is that if somebody really wants
to be leader, they have the wrong personality to be in charge. In the
U.S., look at both Bush#2 and Clinton, then check out L.Johnson and
Nixon.

point. If this country was ever "free", it ceased to be so during the
last 40 years. mb
