   clever answer. But because it is for a small research I'm doing can anyone   
   think or does anyone know if there is yet another reason?

   Hands are difficult to draw.   
      
   Cartoon character often have three fingers, less to animate.   
      
   If you are going to produce 24 drawings for each second of film, you   
   need to keep things as simple as possible
