   COLUMBUS, Ohio —
The Ohio Department of Health has identified a probable case of
monkeypox, the health director announced Monday.

The case was identified based on preliminary testing at Ohio
Department of Health's laboratory. Confirmatory monkeypox
testing at US Center for Disease Control and Prevention is
   currently pending.

MonkeypoxExplainer: What is monkeypox and where is it spreading?
The patient is an adult male residing in Ohio.

The patient has isolated and is following recommendations from
   health officials.

To protect the patient's privacy, Ohio health officials won't be
   providing details on the patient.

Health Director Bruce Vanderhoff said monkeypox does not spread
easily between people so the risk is very low on contracting the
   disease.

"This disease is not like COVID-19, which can be spread easily,"
   Vanderhoff said.

MonkeypoxWHO: Monkeypox won't turn into pandemic, but many
   unknowns
Monkeypox is a viral illness that typically begins with flu-like
symptoms, swollen lymph nodes and a rash. However, recent cases
identified in the U.S. appear less likely to have initial
constitutional symptoms of flu-like illness or rash and may also
stay contained to a particular part of the body.

The illness spreads through direct contact, sores, scabs, bodily
fluids, prolonged face-to-face contact, i.e., intimate contact.

MonkeypoxWhat the CDC means by 'practice enhanced precautions'
   in its monkeypox travel advisory
ODH recommends anyone experiencing symptoms like a rash,
including lesions, to contact their health provider.

Those feeling ill should stay home unless seeking medical care.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 49
cases of monkeypox in the United States — worldwide there have
been nearly 1,500 cases. No deaths have been reported.
