Health officials have identified a sixth case of monkeypox in
Michigan, this time on the state’s west side.

Michigan’s handful of known cases since the spring have been
found in Oakland County (3), Detroit (1) and now Kent County (1).

An additional case has not been associated with a specific
county, given that the individual has residences in both
Michigan and another state, according to the Department of
Health and Human Services. The state is coordinating case
   investigation with that jurisdiction.

Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the
monkeypox virus. It comes from the same family of viruses as
smallpox, with more often milder symptoms. Common symptoms
include fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes,
   chills, and exhaustion.

An additional symptom which is helpful in separating monkeypox
from COVID or other viral infections, is the rash, which can
look like pimples or blisters. It will typically appear on the
face, inside the mouth, or on the hands, feet, chest, genitals
   or anus.

Health officials have said the virus is not likely to cause the
same widespread infection as coronavirus. No largescale
vaccination program is anticipated at this time, though
residents are advised to be on the lookout for rash illnesses
   consistent with monkeypox.

Michigan’s case count is tied for 16th in the nation. State
officials declined to provide details surrounding the severity
of the cases “to protect patient privacy,” but noted that “so
far in the U.S. hospitalization is not common and generally has
occurred for pain management and not necessarily due to severe,
   disseminated infection.”

Cases of monkeypox have been identified throughout 39 states,
with the largest outbreaks coming from New York (156 cases),
California (148) and Illinois (122), according to CDC data.

Below is an interactive map of case data from the CDC. Hover
over each state to see how many cases of monkeypox have been
reported as of Monday, July 11, 2022.

The most common means of spreading monkeypox is through direct
contact with the rash, scabs or body fluids of someone who has
been infected. Avoid contact with the rash and do not handle a
sick person’s bedding/clothing, or share eating utensils or cups
   with an infected individual.

If you believe you have been infected, contact your local health
department to determine your testing options. If infected, you
should isolate at home until your rash has healed.
