No one wants nuclear suicide - most suicides only want themselves to
end, not everyone else and all history.

He turns 70 tomorrow and his mark on history is rather poor. Not what
he expected at all. His army is on the verge of collapse, he can't
use his nukes, Gerasimov is necessary to follow through the chain of
command and Gerasimov is no fool - he's a pretty honorable career
soldier not a fake FSB clone like Putin. More likely if Putin orders
something stupid (which won't happen) Gerasimov will kill him before
Putin kills Gerasimov.
One or two or ten "small" tactical devices won't make any difference
on the huge vast battlefield being fought over. The men and materiel
is too dispersed. Would need airburst as well so fallout doesn't
drift over Russia, so stuff all effects after the blast, very little
fallout - Hiroshima and Nagasaki were airbursts, they were
continuously inhabitable after they NUCDET'd and have been ever since,
loss of average lifespan at worst about a month or less.
And if Putin does get his order through, almost immediately the US air
force will destroy his army in Ukraine, pronto. End of story.
Putin's only shield from vengeance is the nukes. Most of them
probably don't work anyhow.
