I fixed the indentation above, I was the one who talked about painful
memories. I don't know if this makes any difference or not.

I'd back your personal feelings over most authorities, Carol :)

That said, I've experienced a rather impressive variety of physical pains in
dreams, often accompanied by vision of being stabbed with a sword, or having
my skin torn open in more horrific ways. I've also had the same sensations
while awake and not dreaming, when under certain emotional stresses. I have
come up with a theory to explain this, based on my readings in various areas
and some experience, but not directly tested.

We have muscles that respond automatically to emotional and mental states.
(For instance the smile reflex.) While we are accustomed to seeing these
responses on the face, they occur, in fact, over the whole body. Sudden
changes in muscle tension can be caused by sudden shifts in emtional/mental
state. In turn, these changes in tension can result in a variety of
sensations, including pain. (The belief that acupunture can be used to
change someone's emotional state suggests that this process might be
   bidirectional.)

Therefore, in my opinion, a pain sensation in a dream might not have a true
physical cause. (Although changes in muscle tension patterns can produce
   physical outcomes later.)
