Actually some people think that is the       way memory works: you don't actually "remember" anything, you just       recreate images (sounds, etc.) from the imprints in your brain, and then       label them as memories, although they are just your subjective, possibly       distorted associations that you in a sense re-experience. Anyway, this       unconscious process mentioned earlier happens much more easily under       hypnosis (and possibly other "altered" states, like dreaming).
