   It is simpler for foetuses to develop the same, with only the necessary   
   changes, rather than code for removing every unnecessery thing.

   Ancient ancesters would have climbed using all four limbs, with claws.   
   They slowly evolved into nails and will disappear eventually. The nail   
   on the little toe is already well on the way to disappearing in many people.
