   It appears you never graduated from sixth grade government. Quite aside   
   from the fact that the pledge came along over a hundred years after the   
   Constitution was enacted, there's also the fact that a Republic is just   
   any modern nation-state that isn't a monarchy or theocracy. Usually, but   
   not always, sovereignty lies with the people, and when it does, that's   
   called a democracy. In America, sovereignty lies with the people.   
   Therefore it is a democracy.
