   This is not a "simple" case of an oppressed populace rising   
   up to overthrow a vile dictator. Assad has very substantial   
   popular support, and this is shaping up to be a classic if   
   nasty civil war.   
      
   The only useful and commendable response would be to put   
   some serious money in dealing with the millions of refugees.   
   Proper housing, food, medical facilities and education would   
   go a very long way to relieving the suffering. Perhaps more   
   importantly for the long term, such generosity would also   
   build us a significant pool of goodwill among the population   
   without exposing us to the very real risk of arming Islamist   
   extremists.
