No, my original point was that the GOP claims that raising taxes on
businesses "kills jobs". That would imply that NOT raising taxes on
businesses promotes hiring. Taxes are currently low, so, hiring should
be high. You made the (perfectly valid, btw) point that government
imposes other costs on businesses, such as OSHA, EPA, etc, and these costs
   also have to be considered.

My rebuttal was that the cost of complying with regulations has not
changed significantly within the last 10 years. I picked 10 years because
the current economic down turn began, conveniently enough, just as GW was
leaving office, about 5 years ago, and the sluggish economy is a criticism
   of Obama's administration.

I own a small business, and the only major change in costs in the last
decade is the passage of Obamacare, which won't really effect me, as we
are small enough to be exempt from the requirement of providing health
insurance to our employees. In any case, those expenses have not kicked
in yet. I don't know of anything new with OSHA, but that might vary
depending on the nature of the business.

In any case, business needs a healthy social, physical, and political
environment in which to thrive. Raising taxes to improve the welfare of
those who will work for a company as well as those who will buy their
product is a worthwhile investment. Yes, it increases costs in the short
term, but should improve profitability in the longer term. So, I think
the GOP is wrong in their insistence that taxes on businesses and
individuals must not be raised under any circumstances.
