I started with the C=64 too (when all my friends had ZX Spectrums),
before moving to the Atari ST (when all my friends had C=Amigas), then
386 PCs (when all my friends had NES/Sega).

   >Could it be that the ones really in the know or at least comfortable with
technology tend to avoid it personally? (except for the geeks that is ;)

Hmmm, I'm semi-geek. I have never been cutting edge, even when I could
afford it, as I never saw the point of being the first to own the
super-duper upgrade that will be 25% of the price in 6 months time.

In hardware terms I tend to stick with what works (my gaming PC hasn't
been upgraded in nearly 3 years [it runs Fallout 3 so why upgrade?], I
have a 7 year old mobile phone, I only got an iPod 2 years ago as my
   1Gb MP3 player broke, etc).

In software terms I do try out new stuff but I'm more cautious about
getting involved with new soft-tech until I can see the benefit/need,
and the companies ethics (hence hating 'free' marketing-driven, or
forced upgrade/update methods - been burnt before on those).

   >An old C64 running in the da house...

I only scrapped my C=64 when I moved back to London a couple of years
ago as I didn't have the space for it, or my old Atari St, 3
part-complete PC boxes, etc, etc. I also need to get rid of 2 older
TVs that work fine but I have no space for, old DVD and VHS players,
   etc. I am a tech hoarder :)
